Colourful Cornish 37's
37229 Respryn 18th April 1994 08.13hrs. Having heard this one leaving St.Blazey several minutes before 37521 was photographed coming down the Goonbarrow branch we had a heck of a drive to get here just in time to catch this 7Z21 07.20 St.Blazey SS-Exeter Riverside SS. We hurtled to a stop on top of the bridge as the loco was already in sight. Camera out ,sort of focus ,snap ,collapse and just hope it was OK. The only time I saw this working in my 3 visits.
37673 Treffry Viaduct 12th April 1995 09.55hrs. ECC Rocks ,Goonbarrow -Fowey Dock. Loco unbranded at this time.
Standing on the disused viaduct with the far end blocked off and thick woods behind me ,in the event of the Beast of Bodmin Moor appearing I was deciding whether I would face the beast or leap over the parapet. Fortunately the train arrived so I didn't have to make the choice.37669+37668 Respryn 13th April 1995 09.20hrs. 6S55 09.40 Burngullow ECC-Irvine Caledonian Paper.
After taking the shot I resisted the natural temptation to rush off back towards Lostwithiel and Par but having seen this train running an hour or so early I thought I should stay for a while at least and try to find out why.Back from Plymouth , 37673 St.Blazey Gate 13th April 1995 18.19hrs.Empties Fowey Dock-Rocks ECC ,Goonbarrow.
So lucky once again with the last shot of the holiday to guess the right destination of three possible ones. I had just 20 minutes to get back to the car from the pub steps at Golant before driving to St.Blazey ,finding the L/C still open ,parking the car ,running to the spot and taking this shot. Phew ! Could I do it now ? Most doubtful !!Some two years later and the first morning of my final trip 37895 takes a spare sleeper set through Par on its journey to London. The incoming set failed at Exeter and these coaches were needed for this night's train. The 37 worked as far as Plymouth.
E.Par 7th April 1997 10.40hrs. ECS 5Z70 Long Rock-Old Oak Common.37673 Little Treviscoe 7th April 1997 12.22hrs. I went here three days running for a train but just got the same loco LE each day. Considering a footprint of The Beast had been found in a local clay pit just a few days before ,scrambling through head-high rhododendron bushes and scrub ,an ideal daytime resting place for it ,I felt understandably nervous.

The picture was taken from the roof-top garden of a self-catering cottage which was accessed by way of a very steep track ascending by the side of the house. This time the house was let and the guests were enjoying afternoon tea overlooking the estuary when I burst in on them saying I wouldn't be long but needed the corner of their roof for just one minute. They didn't know what to say but by the time they had thought of something , I had the picture and was gone.37521 Respryn 8th April 1997 09.29hrs. Having arrived on the overnight Enterprise working ,these wagons were being worked back from St.Blazey yard to Bodmin Parkway Sdgs where they would be collected by a privately owned loco from the Bodmin Railway for the short trip up to Fitzgerald Lighting in Bodmin.
With Chinese take-away balanced on my knees ,the appearance of 37696 at Par Station came as something of a shock ,8th April 1997 18.10hrs. Trip freight Parkandillack/Burngullow-St.Blazey SS.
With rice and whatever flying all over the front seat of the car I managed a quick leap out and got the shot.
